Three Cake Trends to Look Out for in 2020

Do you ever notice cake trends as they come and go? It’s something I didn’t notice as much before I got really into making cakes, but now I can’t help but see the trends!

I think in general trending cake designs are showing a lot of organic shapes and textures (think drips, unfinished edges, and palette knife painting). But that could also just be what I see because of the people I follow! We can’t predict the future, but here are three cake trends that I think you’ll start to see popping up more in 2020:

Embroidery-Inspired Cakes

Okay, so maybe I just want this to be a trend because I love embroidery so much. Can you blame me though?

There’s a huge wave of modern embroidery artists making THE COOLEST stuff, and those textures are just so satisfying in frosting form. I’ve dabbled in the embroidery icing a bit myself, but I have to say the bakers at Sweet Heather Anne in Anne Arbor, Michigan are killing it with their signature textile style.

They’ve even been offering some workshops to learn their techniques, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see a lot more cakes in this style.

Terrazzo Cakes

Cakes mimicking building materials like marble and concrete have been popular for a while, but I think terrazzo patterns are going to have a big moment.

There was a time when terrazzo patterns would remind me only of my elementary school floor (i.e. outdated), but now I’m definitely seeing them in a new light. You can be sure to see a terrazzo cake video around here pretty soon. 🙂

In the meantime, here’s an absolutely perfect example from Nutmeg Cake Design in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I seriously can’t get over how perfectly this cake balances texture and clean lines.

Vintage Piping Techniques

Lastly, I think we’ll start seeing some fresh takes on these old-fashioned piping techniques. If your mom had puffy shoulders and a hat in her wedding pictures, you know the kind of cake-covered-in-piping I’m talking about. But all the frilly, fussy piping of decades passed is really charming with updated color palettes.

And it’s even more charming when accompanied by written sentiments apt for the times, like this cake from Bon Vivant Cakes in Chicago, Illinois.

So what do you think of these trends? Love them or hate them? Leave a comment and let me know!
