This stained glass cake was created using a mix of a few different techniques. First I used a set of small metal cutters to outline my design. Second, I diluted some gel food coloring with a bit of alcohol to paint paint the individual shapes. Finally, I use a small round tip to pipe black buttercream lines over the entire design to complete the stained glass effect.
To create this design, you’ll need to start with a cake that has already been frosted and chilled. You want the buttercream to be firm so that it doesn’t get brushed away when you begin to paint.
For design inspiration I searched stained glass patterns on Pinterest. I saw lots of fun geometric and Art Deco style patterns, so I used these Ateco cutters to help create the design. If you wanted to do something less structured, you might want to trace the design out with a toothpick first.
For the paints, I diluted some Americolor Super Red, Leaf Green, Avocado, and Forrest Green with vodka. If you’d like to learn more about how to paint cakes, read my blog post How to Paint on Buttercream.
Finally, I outlined the whole design with black buttercream and a #2 round piping tip.
The whole design took me about an hour to complete, and that includes a few breaks where I had to put the cake back in the fridge. That might sound like a lot, but overall I would say this is an easy technique. If you can paint in between and trace the lines, you can execute this technique! The difficulty will be based more upon whether you choose a simple or complex design.
If you use this technique, be sure to tag me or send me a picture on Instagram, I’d love to see what you create!
