This cute spider web cake is the perfect non-scary Halloween design!
You might be wondering how to pipe a spider web with nice, smooth lines. Well, in this video you’ll see the special trick I used.
By turning the (cold) cake upside down, I was able to use gravity to my advantage to get nice piped lines without any wiggles.
This technique is called stringwork and is most often used with royal icing. A stringwork technique allows you to get super smooth lines because you don’t actually pipe against the surface of the cake. Instead, you touch the cake only at the beginning and end of each line. This way, the line of icing hangs and doesn’t pick up any shake from your hand.
